In traditional Chinese translation theory, Yan Fu’s translation criterion of “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” is the golden rule in the translation field. It comes from Yan Fu, an outstanding thinker and translator in modern China, and still has irreplaceable influence in the domestic translation field after 100 years. Relatively speaking, functional linguistics is a new discipline, which divides the functions of language into three pure functions. It is this idea that provides a more specific way of operation to realize Yan Fu’s “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance”, overcomes the abstract and ethereal in Yan Fu’s translation standards, and makes these three words no longer elusive.so as to make the untranslatable become translatable.some preliminary discussion of these issues in this Yes Toronto Translation.
